Nautical Light Fixtures for a Seafaring Theme

When most people think of nautical light fixtures they think of boats and the types of lights you might find near the mast or on the bulkhead. Boat lights don't have to be reserved just for boats, however, as they can add an interesting touch of décor in your home.

Some obvious places for these types of lights would be outdoors, in beach houses and anywhere near a body of water. Many people enjoy having their beach houses or their seaside homes decorated in a mariner theme. Nautical light fixtures can add a special touch to that design.

For homes that follow an entirely nautical theme, which types of lights to use and how to use them depends a lot on the exact theme. If it's a beach theme, fewer ship-style lights are called for. But if there's a definite high seas, mariner theme at work, then the more ship-style accessories, the better.

A ship's wheel at some point in the décor is perfect for a truly nautical theme. This can be mounted outside on the front of the home, or even on the door as a type of wreath. It can be plain, or greenery or flowers can be attached to give it more of a wreath feel. The sight of a ship's wheel will definitely let guests know that some seaside décor is in store for them.

For the outside of a home, a bulkhead light makes a very vintage-looking porch light, especially if you put one on each side of the entryway. These lights should be brass in finish and very chunky. Typically, the brass mounts to the wall and then curves down or sticks straight out so that the bulb hangs from the fixture. And in keeping with truly nautical lights, the bulb should have a brass cage around it. That was to prevent the lights from being easily broken while at sea. While it's not necessary for your porch, that cage definitely lets people know it's a ship light as the style is a recognizable one.

In an entryway, a great type of fixture to have is a chandelier done in a distinctive style. One very quirky design is an anchor serving as the post and two arms of the chandelier with lights mounted on each point or hanging from them to continue the chandelier feel. The metal should be either shiny brass or weathered, greenish brass, to give it an authentic look.

Nascar Party Lights - Practical But Fun

One of the fastest growing sports today is Nascar racing. While I am a gigantic sports fan, Nascar was not something that I paid a lot of attention to in the past. However, with Danica Patrick making the move from Indy car racing to Nascar, I may just become a big Nascar fan after all. As I speak with other fans of racing, they seem to indicate that having a favorite driver is what really holds your interest in the sport, so I guess it is the same as having a favorite baseball or football team in that sense. Like some big football fans hold Super Bowl parties, Nascar fans hold race parties. Of course, these Nascar parties, like all parties, require decorations. Since lighting has become a big part of any occasion, could Nascar party lights be far behind? Of course not.

I would expect that anyone decorating for a racing party would begin much the same as a fan of any other sport. You adorn your home with memorabilia of your favorite team in addition to the normal team logo items that are available. I am also sure that you utilize some images and logos of Nascar as a whole so that your guests are not too put off if they happen not to be a fan of the same driver and race team as you.

When I thought about where to go to purchase Nascar party lights, I began with a search of the Internet and started at Amazon.com. What I found was a couple of generic offerings of string lights that included lights depicting checkered flags and a red and white race car. These and the other string lights I found consist of a ten light set with alternating covers on a twelve foot light string. Much like your usual string Christmas lights, they are constructed like an extension cord so up to two additional sets of string lights can be added. Also available at Amazon are string lights that are white covers with a driver's number painted in black. These seem rather bland for a sport that likes to paint its cars in all kinds of flashy colors and schemes. Besides that, they do not have the Danica Patrick model so I decided to move on.

A further search of the Internet did yield some better results as far as finding light strings with covers depicting more authentically painted cars of some favorite drivers. However, the strings are not as long but do contain the same number of lights. The cars my initial search found belonged to drivers such as Matt Kenseth, Jimmy Johnson and Carl Edwards. I am sure a more thorough search will produce results locating the cars of most of the more popular drivers. Since my search has yet to locate the Danica Patrick string lights I am looking for, I will continue to hold off on the purchase of my Nascar party lights until sometime in the future when Danica makes her way to the senior circuit and becomes more of a main stream driver than just another pretty face.

Types of Outdoor Christmas Lights Checklist

ItemTitle

So you have decided to put on the best Christmas outdoor lighting display on the block this year. You have started a plan, measure the places the lights are to go. The next important step is to decide what types of lights to use.

Here is a checklist

- C7bulbs 2 inch long, large, bright, visible, traditional, and easy to change. Their big advantage is that when one light fails the rest of the string stays alight. This style of light comes with a number of different sockets on a string, which makes it easy to determine how long a string you need to fit the space for the lights. These lights can also be purchased with the cord separate to the bulbs, enabling you to choose the lighting effect required. They can be expensive to run with high power consumption, unless you choose the C7 bulb shape fitted with LED's. A twinkle style is also available for this type of string (this is where every say 6th bulb will turn on and off giving a twinkling impression).

- C9 bulbs 3 inch long with the same comments and advantages as the C7, only with a larger bulb and thus larger light source.

- Mini-Lights- These are the smaller lights traditionally using small incandescent bulbs, but many now come with LED's for outdoor Christmas tree lights. The major problems with this type of light string is that when a bulb fails it takes out a section or the entire string, making it difficult and time consuming to find the dead bulb and replace it. The cords come in white, green or brown to match the background you wish to put them against. Mini lights are great in that, the sets can be easily connected together or connected to a controller that will turn them on and off to music, or a programmed flashing display. There are many different color options for fairy lights from clear and white through to almost any color you can think of.

- LED lights are available in both the traditional C7 and C9 styles and also in mini or fairy lights. Led have the advantage of being low on power consumption and cool to the touch, much safer with children around. LED lights also last a very long time and are sturdier than incandescent bulbs, avoiding the need for bulb replacement. Mini Lights are the most common form of outdoor LED Christmas lights about, although more types are arriving each year as technology and cost improves. The most amazing LED lights are the color changing ones, generally in blue/green shades or red/orange shades where the lights gradually change through a number of colors. A very cool effect.

- Solar Lights- solar outdoor Christmas lights are becoming more and more common. They are good for places where it is hard to get power to. They are usually LED lights, charged up by the sun during the day and alight at night. In places where there is not much sun during the day they are unlikely to get charged up sufficiently.

- Net Lights - these are great for bushes and shrubs, the lights are connected together in a grid arrangement, making it easy to just drape over a plant giving the effect of equally spaced lights effortlessly. Usually LED lights.

- Rope lights - This style has LED lights encased in vinyl cord looking like a rope, hence the name outdoor Christmas rope lights. It makes storage and installation very easy and produces a softer light. These have the advantages of LED lights, without the storage issues of fairy or mini lights. As mini lights this style can also be selected to have different light display patterns such as flashing, twinkle or chaser.

- Animated Lights - These are shapes such as angels, stars, nativity scenes that have LED lights placed around the edge in varying colors to illuminate the shape. There are many different shapes available.

- Shimmering Spheres - These glowing balls and come in several different sizes. The ball consists of 100 or so mini lights connected together to make a ball shape, when illuminated it produces a shimmering effect to add to you Outdoor lighting display.

I hope you find this check list useful to help you find the right type of outdoor Christmas lights for your yard.

Halloween Graveyard - Make a Cemetery in Your Front Yard

Halloween Graveyard - Make a Cemetery in Your Front Yard

ItemTitle

You can build a Halloween graveyard in your front yard...or back yard if you like! A graveyard scene is one of the coolest decorations you can make in October. What a great way to add to the spooky, fun feeling we all get around Halloween! Now, let's find out how you can make a scary cemetery scene right in you very own yard.

First, don't wait until the very last minute! Some graveyards can be quite elaborate, and you won't be able to do that in a few days. Plan out what you want your boneyard to look like. You can plan how many tombstones you want and where you want to put them to make your potters field as ghoulish as you can.
If you are creating your very first Halloween graveyard, keep it simple this time. When you are more experienced you can build a more elaborate burying ground.

It's Easy to Build a Graveyard

An easy way to build a graveyard scene is to make your own headstones from cardboard. Cut the card board in a tombstone shape and paint it gray. Think of funny epitaphs to write one each one. Bill is dead, the end, or Bill was a liar when he was alive, and now all he does is lie. Or write some funny names on them I.B. Dead or U. R. Next. Hang a sign that says "Welcome to Necropolis".

Make Some Tombstones

You can also buy simple cardboard tombstones from an online Halloween catalog store. They have pre- made stones that are ready for you to set up. Some tombstones are made of cardboard and some are made of foam. These tombstones can be pre-assembled or you might have to put them together with the help of clips or glue. They might even be attached to a wooden stake that you just have to stick in the ground.

How ever you decide to get your tombstones, when you have them, place them where you want them in your yard. Wow, it's starting to look pretty good, you are almost done! Put some leaves in front of each stone, so it looks like a burial mound. Get some fake spiderweb material and string it from one stone to the next. Use some glow in the dark paint to decorate the cemetery a little...don't over do it, you want it to look macabre.

Make Some Shadows

If you have any spot lights in your yard, why not set them up in the back of the tombstones. Don't use too many, and make sure the wires are hidden safely away so no one trips over them. The lights will create some shadows in your graveyard and make it look spooky. You will only need one light for three or four headstones, so don't over do the light...it won't be scary if you do.

Get Some Body Parts

Get an old shirt or some gloves and fill them with newspaper or leaves. Have them hanging out of the burial mounds, like the dead who are buried there are rising. You can buy some bones, unless you happen to have a skeleton already laying around, and place them around the Halloween graveyard you have made in your front yard.

Welcome To The Graveyard

Now if you are a more experienced graveyard maker, you know exactly what to do. Just keep adding on to your gory burial scene each year, and before you know it you will become "The Graveyard" house everyone wants to go see! You can even add some scary Halloween music to your grave scene to give people the chills when they go by.

It's fun and easy to make a graveyard in your front yard at Halloween, so give it a try. You can make a project out of it and get the entire family involved.

How to String Lights on a Christmas Tree

The Holiday season is the best time of year, decorating my home and the Christmas Tree. So how do you string lights on a Christmas Tree? On we go to the fine art of stringing Christmas Lights on our Trees....and yes, it can be considered an art. And to some a fine art.

Make sure that before you begin, to have everything you need on hand. This will eliminate not having something you need while you are the ladder. So we will begin with the ladder, make sure you have a sturdy step ladder or small ladder handy. You will need this while you are wrapping the upper branches, even with a small tree, being on a ladder makes stringing your lights much easier.

You will obviously need your lights, an extension cord if the socket is not close or a step on off/on switch cord, makes lighting your tree easier and some patience.

Would you be surprised to know that it is recommended that you start stringing your Christmas Tree lights at the bottom? We had always started at the top. Reason being...you can follow the electrical outlet with the string of lights and not have too much or too little left over from stringing from the top. Never thought of it that way before. You will also be able to start with the correct male/female connections, ever string lights and end up with two female ends?

When decorating your Christmas Tree, always start with the lights. The lights are first thing that should be put on before garland or ornaments. Before you start, make sure that the lights are in working order, nothing worse than putting the lights on the tree and half the strand is not working.

As you string your lights use a weaving motion one light under a branch and the next light over, under and over. Tuck the cord into the branches so the cord does not show.

Estimate your space as you work your lights into the branches, stagger and space your rows so that there are no bare spots or clumps of lights together. Be especially careful not to clump the lights together at the top of the tree. The top of the tree should be the showplace for your topper.

If you decide you need more lights on your Christmas Tree, use additional strands and repeat the process of weaving from the top of the tree to the bottom.

Not sure how many lights you need, a quick rule of thumb is to take the height of your tree and times by 10. For example, a six foot tree would approximately 60 feet...I know I go way overboard on the amount of lights on my tree but just can't help it.

Now that you have finished stringing and are satisfied with the lights on your Christmas Tree, it is time to decorate your decorate your tree with ornaments, garland and whatever tickles your fancy....

Outdoor String Lights - Light Up the Night

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Outdoor string lights are a great way to light up the night. They look great hanging in trees and off the deck.

What Are They?

These lights look a bit like Christmas lights they are strung end to end with small lights that are sometimes covered with larger lanterns or shades. They add a certain flare to outdoor spaces. They are often used in trees outside of restaurants and night clubs. A favorite for these venues is to use simple white twinkle lights to add a touch of class to outdoor areas.

Placement

These types of lights are made specifically for outdoors. They are durable and impervious to the weather. They are usually hung from trees, deck rails or from large patio umbrellas they are used all around the back yard, rarely do you see them in the front of homes. No equipment is needed to install these lights but it is a wise choice to install them in areas close to an electrical outlet or where an extension cord can be cleverly disguised by bushes or ground cover.

Models

As of yet there are not any reliable solar powered outdoor string lights there are battery powered varieties but not solar. Usually they are powered by an electrical source. There is usually a triple pronged plug that needs to be plugged into a triple pronged wall outlet or extension cord. Most of the models are identical the difference lies in the lamp shades that are used on them, a very popular style is a Chinese type lantern shade. The most popular is a simple white of clean bulb without any shade at all. Some models come with timers so that they can be turned on and off automatically.

Cost

These lights are very affordable. The type of model will play a role in exactly how affordable they are. Of course like anything else the more elaborate and original the lights are the more expensive the lights will be, but even at the most expensive level the cost is relatively low. Usually the price will range anywhere from ten dollars per string to forty dollars per string. The string of lights can contain anywhere from five lights to fifty lights. Outdoor string lights can be purchased anywhere outdoor furniture and equipment is sold. These are great lighting options to add to your outdoor haven to extend the amount of time you can spend outdoors.

Ledward Kaapana - Weeha Swing

Ledward Kaapana - Weeha Swing

One of the great joys of my life these days is hanging with the inimitable Mr. Ledward Kaapana when he tours Northern California. On his current visit he spent an afternoon and evening in my little home recording studio exploring a Tacoma Papoose. Needless to say I really enjoyed having a video subject of Ledward's talent and charm. Led has played Sonny Chillingworth's "Weeha Swing" for many years, but I don't think his flying fingers have been captured in an HD closeup too often. On this occasion Led started hitting his stride before I got my lights and cameras fully deployed, but as I often say, "It's better to be lucky than good." The trusty Panasonic Lumix ZS3 was in just the right spot to capture the dancing digits and the smile. The Papoose is a short scale six (or twelve) string guitar, now out of production I believe. This particular instrument was originally owned by Bay Area slack key master, Patrick Landeza. He selected it from the assembly line at Tacoma a number of years ago. He recently passed this rare and lovely P6K Papoose along to me. Led was charmed by it from the instant he picked it up and the result has been hours of gorgeous music. He's tried at least four different tunings on it so far, and it sings in all of them with Mr. Kaapana conducting. In this video he's playing a B-Flat version of G wahine. From low to high, In G: D / G / D / F Sharp / B / D In B Flat (as played in the video) : F / B Flat / F / A / D / F In relative scale degrees: V / I / V ...

String Lights - The Most Fun Outdoor Lighting Around

Samsung Galaxy

I'll never forget, on the first night of every family camping trip, the first light of those beloved colorful string lights we had helped mother to hang from tree to tree earlier that afternoon.

It was always the same feeling when their soft but jolly light fell on the ground around us... it was time to be having fun!

That's string lights for you. Soon as they come on, you just feel like smiling. And anyone that has hung these festive lights and enjoyed that atmosphere knows what I'm talking about.

But in those days, unless you were camping or holding an outdoor Hawaiian luau, the string lights mostly stayed in a box, just gathering dust in the attic.

These days people don't need special occasions to hang these little wonders but have made them permanent lighting resources as a part of their landscape decor. And people are loving string lights as never before.

And it thrills me to see them becoming so popular. As a child, I just never understood why we only used them on our camping trips. We had the small multi-colored Chinese lantern type and they made the prettiest glow on our faces as we sat beneath them telling ghost stories.

Today, there are so many styles of string lights to choose from, and all of them ready to make any corner of your garden a very fun place to be. And not just for an occasional party, but every night!

When my parents passed, I asked for those old Chinese lantern string lights my mother had strung so many times through the years. Though dusty, worn and torn, and most of the bulbs burned out as well, they hold so many fond memories of our family's camping trips, they are priceless to me.

And in a special corner of my backyard, I have hung some very similar Chinese lanterns. And it's the spot everyone's congregates to, faces aglow, conversation lively... just fun all around.

String Lights - Perfect For Screened Porch

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

We are all familiar with festoon lighting - strings of lights used around the holidays. They illuminate open air venues, like circuses, and restaurant patios and gatherings under tents. They are low cost, and practical.

Strings of lights came to mind as permanent lighting for the screened porch in the house we were building. They would be a good fit with this informal, industrial style house. String lights are not the same thing as low voltage cable lights, which are not suitable for outdoors, and can cost more than ten times as much.

String lights are simple to install: During the electrical wiring stage, three outlets were installed high on the wall at intervals across the room. The outlets were connected to a switch, so the lights could be turned on easily. During the finishing stage, ordinary wire was attached to eye screws in the walls. At one end, the eye screws were next to the outlets, so that the light string could be plugged in. Three strands of medium gage wire were attached to the eye screws and pulled tight across the room.

We first tried a package of little mini lights on one of the wires, but did not like the twisted green electric wire that came with lights. It was too noticeable. So we took those back and got three boxes of medium bulb Christmas lights. These came with simpler electric wire and larger bulbs. They were called C-7's. You can get C-9's if you want bigger bulbs. There are lots of bulb shapes and sizes to choose from, all the way up to regular sized bulbs.

Each bulb has a little clip so that it can be hung on the wire. We spaced the lights out, and then pulled the strand tight. This brand of light strand can be cut off, so there was not excess at the end. When the strand is cut, you will need some black electrician's tape to seal the end.

When the light strings were turned on we had a nice surprise. The lighting was beautifully diffused throughout the room. It was so soft and diffused that it seemed like moonlight. Strings of small lights have a special ambience - they remind us of parties and festive times. It was fun to re-interpret this familiar lighting style for everyday use. Photos: String Lights
